Next stop: west Jeju and its emerald sea!

See half the island by bus! Journey northwest on bus 202

Departing from Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal, Bus 201 runs along the eastern periphery of Jeju Island, while Bus 202 (formerly 702) runs along the western periphery. Both are excellent options for tourists as many of the must-see sites are right along both routes. Places like the salt flats, the cactus fields, and its emerald ocean are all waiting to be discovered!

    Natural rock salt flats
    Gueom-ri Dolyeomjeon

Jeju Island is famous for its volcanic geology and stone culture among its people. Over the centuries, islanders have used the natural flat stone formations found along the coast to evaporate sea water and produce salt. At first glance, these geological formations look something like the shell of a turtle… its sections divided by raised areas. These are actually clay partitions that in one form or another have been in use since the 1500s, according to local records. Bright sunshine and a strong ocean breeze evaporate the water and leave the sea salt. The result is a thick salt mixture that is high in mineral content. This product has long been a major source of income for the villagers, though profitability has somewhat been undercut in recent years by mainland imports.

    A hidden place to explore
    Handam Coastal Walking Path

Jeju is a great place to appreciate expansive, coastal scenery, but not only that, if you are looking for a great walking route, then this is the place for you. The Handam Coastal Walking Path is well maintained and almost never crowded. It is a pleasant walk that envelops your senses. In 2009, it was named one of Jeju’s “31 Hidden Treasures”. The walk is about 1.2 kilometers and at a slow pace takes less than an hour to reach Gwakji Beach.

    Unforgettable emerald ocean
    Hyeopjae Beach

If you had to rank the most popular beaches of Jeju Island, this might well be at the top of your list. The pristine, transparent sea allows the sun to shine on white sand below the surface and thus casts a most intense indigo color. The scene is so mesmerizing, that you can just lose yourself in its beauty and relax your harried mind. The sunset, too, is from this westerly vantagepoint all the more memorable and photogenic. Many pensions, restaurants and cafes have been set up in recent years making it a rich culinary experience and place to spend a few days away from urban life. All in all, it’s a small, quiet, charming site.

A pretty little island and site of the TV drama “Spring Day”
    Biyangdo

From shore, this little volcanic island off Jeju’s northwest is unmistakeable in its shape. Biyangdo has an interesting creation myth associated with it. According to the legend, the island flew here from China some 1,000 years ago — thus its moniker: Biyang-do. However, it is true that the island is quite new… its gradual emergence from the sea is documented in historical records, so it is just a few thousand years old. Biyangdo is a popular spot for fishing and easy hikes. Its peak is just 114-meters above sea level, but on clear days there is a great view of Hallasan Mountain and Jeju’s coastline, including nearby Hyeopjae Beach.

    Unique in Korea
    Wollyeong Cactus Habitat

This sandy, windy spot along Jeju’s northwest coast isn’t very hospitable for most crops. In fact Wollyeong village is the only place in Korea where the cactus grows naturally. Though its place of origin is uncertain, there is a theory that Wollyeong’s cactus species travelled across the Pacific Ocean from Mexico. It is called a “palm cactus” because it resembles a human palm. Recognized as Natural Monument No. 429, the cactus has yellow blossoms in summer and produces purple fruit in fall. A walk through the area’s coastal path — Jeju Olle Walking Trail No. 14 — is a pleasant 20-minute journey, and there are a few cafes, benches and pagoda’s where you can rest and admire the cactus plants which grow on the black basalt.
