VISIT JEJU

Located 55km away from Jeju port in north, Chuja island includes 4 inhabited islands (Sangchujado, Hachujado, Hoenggando, and Chupodo) and 38 uninhabited islands (Jikgudo, Damuraemi, etc.). Sangchuja is the Jeju Olle 18-1 course and Hachuja is the Jeju Olle 18-2 course. To go to Chuja island from Jeju, you need to go to Jeju Port Passenger Terminal.

The ship to Sangchujado is a course that arrives at Sangchujado at 9:30 am and leaves at 16:30. It takes about an hour one way. The ship to Hachujado arrives at 1:45 pm and leaves 10:45 on the next day. Since it takes about an hour longer than going to Sangchujado, it would be a good idea to choose based on the schedule. Reservations through both the Internet and on-site are available. If you want to go to Chuja island for a day trip, you may stay in Chuja island for about five hours. If you want to travel in one day, it is good to take a bus.

It is up to you to choose where to start your Chuja island trip, whether it is Sangchujado or Hachujado. You may just start where your feet lead. You may see the whole island by bus about an hour for a round trip. You may also get off at a bus stop, take a look, and then get back on the bus. You may transfer and if you wisely use the bus time, you may view Chuja island without missing spots.

Among views of Chuja island, the best would be definitely the "Navarone Cliff (Navarone Skyroad)." Originally, residents in Chuja called this cliff as "Doksan." Since "Dolsan (rock mountain)" is referred to as "Doksan" in Chuja dialect, it has been referred to as "Doksan cliff."

Its name, Navarone Cliff, is originated by anglers. It was named after the movie, "Fortress of Navarone," about World War 2 from the 1970s. Since it is as steep as the cliffs in "Fortress of Navarone," the anglers gave the name.

The Navarone cliff is 129.7 above sea level and the tracking course is 2.1km long. If you climb up the steep cliff, you may see a uniquely shaped elephant rock. If you climb to the top, you may see the view of Chuja port at a glance. Pavilions and shelters are provided and the roads are well-maintained for easy walking. It is an essential tourist attraction during the trip to Chuja island, but if you look down from the top, you may feel both amazed and dizzy.

There is also an observatory, "Yongdum Beommokje Stairway," where you may see the magnificent view of Navarone cliff, so let's visit together.

There are mongdol fields all over the coast of Chuja island. Mongdol refers to a very small and round pebble. You may find Hupo Beach located in Daeseo-ri, Sangchujado, by passing through the shrine of General Young Choi, Bogole Mountain shelter, and Damuraemi.

Let's go to Hachujado. The Mojinee Mongdol coast located in Shinyang port is the only beach in Chuja island. You may find Mongdol beach soon after starting from Shinyang port, the starting point of the Jeju Olle 18-2 course.

Since the coast made of small pebbles continues for about 100m, it is not a short distance to enjoy sea bathing. Since it is not crowded, you may feel secluded and this is a perfect place for "Mulmeong (watching the water without thinking)." If you walk along the coastal road, you may see the "Eombawi Jangseung" standing majestically with arms folded under a large rock.

Every seashore rock is a point for fishing just as the "Chuja island fishing point" map. Not too long ago, a 49cm-long bream was caught on a seashore rock, so anglers can't help but love Chuja island. It is said that in Chuja island, almost all fish species can be caught except for a saw-edged perch.

"Boat fishing" is recommended for "Chuja island in fall." In fall, yellow corvina fishing starts based on Chuja island and the "Yellow Corvina Festival," which is a representative local festival, is held. Fall is the busiest season in Chuja island to catch not only yellow corvinas but also mackerel, anchovy, etc.

With just one yellow corvina, you may enjoy a set meal of dried yellow corvina and yellow corvina stew. With mackerel, you may enjoy a sumptuous meal including mackerel sashimi, grilled mackerel, and braised mackerel. Flesh of fall "mackerel" begins hardening and becomes greasy. For a mackerel, the bigger and heavier it is, the better it tastes. There is no place like Chuja island to properly feel the fall. "Chu" of Chuja island may be named after fall (chu).
