Attractions in Udo Island where you can enjoy Mother NatureThe marvelous views of Udo Island, another Jeju in Jeju

Udo, an island that belongs to the bigger island, is an inhabited island on the sea south of Seongsan Sunrise Peak (Ilchulbong Tuff Cone). Udo Island, which takes about 15 minutes by ferry to arrive, is the largest among the 63 islands of Jeju and resembles Jeju the most. What sceneries await us? Here are the carefully chosen attractions that will best represent the charm of Udo.

Udo is a beautiful place where you can enjoy the superb views of nature. There is even a list of eight scenic views of Udo. Visit the places that are extra special among the tourist attractions in Udo.

Hidden gems of sceneries in Udo IslandDolcani Beach
돌칸이해안

The place is named “Dolcani” (a manger) after the concave coastline resembling the shape of a manger. The nickname of Udo is Cow Island, so perhaps it's only natural that there is a manger. You can only get to this place on foot and cannot take a car inside. Let’s take a look around this hidden scenery!

돌칸이해안

If you go down the back road from Cheonjin Port, you can head in the direction of Dolcani Beach. Down the road, you will find the road with countless wishing stone towers.

Looking at the stone towers made of different sizes of dark basalt rocks, you will soon find yourself picking up a small stone and making a wish as well.

Once you pass the stone towers and almost reach the Dolcani Beach, you will see a gazebo. It may look like any other gazebos, but from this one, you can see a magnificent view.

On the side, there are Udobong Peak and Dolcani Beach, and when you look in the direction of the ocean, you will see Seongsan Sunrise Peak, and even Hallasan Mountain.  It is a perfect photo spot where you can capture the whole Jeju Island.

돌칸이해안

When you walk along the long Meokdol Beach, you will finally reach Dolcani Beach. The tuff on Cape Gwangdaekoji in the coastal cliff area of Dolcani Beach and the basalt deposited on the inside of Udobong Peak are in stark contrast. It is evidence that there were two hydrovolcanic eruptions from Udobong Peak. At low tide, when the water recedes, you can see a large rock fully exposed. It's in the shape of the Korean Peninsula, thus the name Hanbandoyeo Rock (The Korean Peninsula Rock).

돌칸이해안

If you get to visit Dolcani Beach when there is heavy rain, you will get to see Biwasa Falls. There is no trace of a waterfall on a sunny day, but when it rains, the rainwater flows and falls along the coastal cliff to create a waterfall. The name literally means a rain-created waterfall. So don't be disappointed if you end up traveling to Udo Island on a rainy day because you're more likely to see an amazing waterfall in Udo that others don’t get a chance to witness.

돌칸이해안

The small and big black pebbles at the foot of the cliffs at Dolcani Beach are already mysteriously beautiful, but Hanbandoyeo Rock that reveals itself at low tide and Biwasa Falls that is created only on rainy days make this place of hidden sceneries even more fascinating.

Exploring a cave in Udo Island?Geommeolle Beach
검멀레해변

There are so many places to see in Udo, the largest island in Jeju, but there are some places where you can go on an unusual adventure. For an unusual trip in Udo, looking for a cave hidden between the canyons, let's set off to Geommeolle Beach!

검멀레해변

To get to Geommeolle Beach, you have to take the bus from the Udo Quay to the opposite side of Udo, Yeonpeyong-ri. When you get off the bus, find the Haenyeo Sculpture that looks as if she is just about to go into the water and enjoy the view of the coast with Udobong Peak. The steep cliffs of Udobong Peak, the waves, and the wind will create scenery that will leave you in awe.

Watching the view is already great, but how about going down to the beach? At the corner of the road, there are stairs to Geommeolle Beach and Dongangyeong Cave. The view changes by second as you step down the stairs. At first, you will be overlooking the beach, but as you go down, you will notice the tall Udobong Peak and Geommeolle Beach, which give off a different vibe.

When you come down the stairs, an open view of Geommeolle Beach will stretch before your eyes. It is a small beach only 100 m lengthwise, and is characterized by black sand. The name Geomeolle means black sand, and you will immediately see where the name came from when you look at the sand. The sand is black in color and has a very soft texture. In the summer, it’s known as the island's representative beach to enjoy a hot sand bath.

At the end of the beach is a cave where legends say that whales used to live there. The cave is called Dongangyeong Cave, but also has a funny nickname, the whale's nostril. On the way to the cave, you can see strange rocks and stones, which are another sightseeing point. The large arch-shaped entrance makes it easy to find the cave. Don’t be disappointed by its small entrance.  When you walk past the entrance and into the cave, you will be amazed to see how large the cave is. As it is a place where concerts are held every year, you will be able to guess the scale and size of it by visiting the cave in person.

Wouldn't it be a shame to miss Geommeolle Beach, which offers a wonderful view of Udobong Peak's amazing coastal cliffs and black sand, and Dongangyeong Cave, which is hidden under Udobong Peak? Since you can only go inside the cave at low tide, make sure to check the tide times when you visit.

Seobinbaeksa, a beach on the west with white sandUdo Sanho Beach
산호해변

There are three beaches in Udo Island, each boasting its special charm. Udo Sanho Beach is one of them, which looks like someone has scattered popcorns all over the beach. Run to Udo Sanho Beach, which is located at a walking distance from Cheonjin Port, and dip your feet in the water!

산호해변

The sand of Udo Sanho Beach is actually not sand. Rhodoliths, a kind of marine algae, washed ashore and were deposited, so it is also called Hongjodangoe (coral sand) Beach.

Rhodoliths refer to red algae that accumulated calcium carbonate in the physiological process and hardened like a stone. Since there are not many rhodolith beaches in the world, Udo Sanho Beach is designated and protected as Natural Monument No. 438 of Korea. For this reason, it is prohibited to take rhodoliths from the beach.

Udo Sanho Beach is also called Seobinbaeksa, a beach on the west with white sand. Since the color of the sea varies according to the depth of the water, its beauty is comparable to other seas in Southeast Asia and the Mediterranean. The white sand reflected in the sunlight and the emerald-colored sea combine to create a stunning landscape that will amaze you. The emerald-colored sea contrasting with the surrounding black basalt is a view that can only be found in Jeju.

Wouldn’t it be a shame just to look at this beautiful beach? Walk along the beach barefoot and try dipping your feet in the water. The water is ice cold, but you will be able to feel Jeju with your body.

If you get a chance to spend a night in Udo Island, make sure to visit Udo Sanho Beach around the sunset. The setting sun will color the sky red, and the ridge of Hallasan Mountain afar will create a picturesque scene. When the moon and the stars start to appear, the scenery of Jimibong Peak in Jongdal-ri on the other side of the sea will present you with a memorable, romantic view.

A beach reminiscent of an exotic resortHagosudong Beach
하고수동

Hagosudong Beach, located on the opposite side of the island across from Udo Sanho Beach, used to be a village fishing ground where people caught anchovies using a fishing net. A big, 400-meter-long beach with shallow water is a go-to spot for many family travelers who come to enjoy swimming in the summer. Now it is more known as a bathing beach.

The sand at Hagosudong Beach is fine and soft, it makes you want to walk barefoot along the beach. Also, the clouds in the blue sky, the emerald-blue sea, and the dazzling sunlight make you wonder if you are somewhere foreign, like Saipan. It is also called Saipan Beach in Jeju because of its exotic atmosphere and scenery that is not so common in Korea.

하고수동

Even in the season when it is difficult to go into the sea and enjoy swimming, throw off your shoes and socks and go into the water. Feel the sand as soft as flour! You will have new memories in Udo the moment you dip your feet in the emerald-blue sea.

Make sure to remember Biyangdo Island, which is not too far away from Hagosudong Beach. Biyangdo Island, an island inside an island, is connected to Udo through Yeondogyo Bridge. Since it’s a relatively small island, we recommend a short walk from Hagosudong Beach to the island.

하고수동

Biyangdo Island has few artificial facilities, so it is a natural campsite where you can experience the sea and sky of Jeju up close. It is also known as one of Korea's Top 3 backpacking sites.

Fall asleep while watching the setting sun and the countless stars twinkling in the night sky and wake up to the dazzling morning sunlight. Be sure to remember the watchtower at Biyangdo Campground, where you can see both the sunset and the sunrise.
