Hallasan Mountain Dongbaek-gil Trail, Representative of Jeju NatureFrom Muobeopjeongsa Temple to Donnaeko Valley, <Walking along Dongbaek-gil Trail>

On Hallasan Mountain, a mountain that represents Jeju, there is the Halla Trail, a fantastical forest path where you can meet nature. The Halla Trail, which surrounds the national forest that sits 600 to 800m above sea level, is an 80km-long forest path that connects Muobeopjeongsa, Sioreum Parasitic Cone, Suakgyo Valley, and Iseungak (Iseungi Volcanic Cone) by using a logistics road and forest trail built during the Japanese occupation of Korea and a transport road for shiitake mushroom farms. For some, Halla Trail is a place to experience the history, ecology, and forest culture of Jeju, whereas, for others, it is a place to heal the difficulties of everyday life. Among the various Halla Trails, we introduce Dongbaek-gil Trail where you can heal with nature and view the history and ecology of Jeju from a diverse perspective.

While you can enter Dongbaek-gil Trail from any point, there is a Halla Trail Information Center next to Muobeopjeongsa Temple, so we recommend acquiring a brochure or other information there before starting.

It also has plenty of parking spaces, so entering Dongbaek-gil Trail at Muobeopjeongsa Temple as the starting point is convenient.

Walking along the path of Muobeopjeongsa Temple, the first and largest holy ground of the anti-Japanese movement in Jeju, you can feel the history of Jeju when you look at the anti-Japanese movement monument and see the Halla Trail signpost.

As you enter the signpost that appears to be an official entrance, you will immediately encounter a path created by nature.

If you walk slowly along the path while breathing in the smell of grass, you will encounter a valley with cool flowing water. The valley flows on the day after it rains on the hillside of Hallasan Mountain, so you can enjoy the Dongbaek-gil Trail while enjoying the sound of nature.

If you walk about 2 to 3km, you will find a Charcoal Kiln Site that can be found in places like Gotjawal Forest. (It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Muobeopjeongsa Temple to the Charcoal Kiln Site)

A Path that Reveals Life in Old JejuWalking Dongbaek-gil Trail: Charcoal Kiln Site - Sioreum Garrison
동백길

In Dongbaek-gil Trail, you can find a Charcoal Kiln Site that remains quite intact, unlike other trail courses in Jeju.

The Charcoal Kiln Site, which looks like a cave, is about 7m in diameter and 1.2m in height without any serious damage to its overall appearance, which makes it an important site that allows visitors to get a glimpse of life in old Jeju.

It is also a popular spot among visitors due to the unique scenery created by the moss and trees growing above the site.

After passing through the Charcoal Kiln Site, you will be on the road to Sioreum Garrison, a path created by trees and nature that will heal you.

As you walk along the Dongbaek-gil Trail, you will notice several signs of shiitake mushroom farms. The highland area of Hallasan Mountain is operated as shiitake mushroom farms due to its optimal condition to grow mushrooms that need a constant water supply.

The scenery with a palm tree mat, which shows traces of humans, gives a joyful impression. (It takes approximately 1 hour from the Charcoal Kiln Site to Sioreum Garrison).

Nature Covers the Painful History of JejuWalking Dongbaek-gil Trail: Sioreum Garrison - Cypress Forest

As you walk along the green path created by nature, you will encounter Sioreum Garrison, which is a historic site of the Jeju Uprising, a painful history of the island.

Currently, you can see the walls, exterior, and interior traces, but we recommend viewing it from near the path.

The Garrison, which seems to have been built for the long-term stationing of the punitive expedition, is covered with nature, and only traces of moss and trees remain.

It is a heartwarming place as if nature is covering the pain of the Jeju Uprising.

If you pass by Sioreum Garrison and continue to walk along the Dongbaek-gil Trail, you will encounter a scene as if you are walking through Gotjawal.

Since Halla Trail is a natural path, it is a path where you can enjoy Jeju nature along with Gotjawal.

The path created by the valley is a place where you can feel the beauty of nature. As you walk along the green path, you will be greeted by a large tree as if it were an entrance. (It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Sioreum Garrison to Cypress Forest).

Phytoncide, Along with the Fresh Air of Hallasan MountainWalking Dongbaek-gil Trail: Cypress Forest - Donnaeko Valley
동백길을 걷다_이미지수정

When you think you have walked along the Dongbaek-gil Trail for quite some time, you will encounter a place where large cypress and cedar trees grow splendidly.

While the efficacy of phytoncide emitted by cypress and cedar is already well-known, the fresh air of the Halla Trail will relieve you of your fatigue.

This place, where the Halla Trail and the Forest Path of Memory meet, is well-equipped with guide maps and signposts to help you keep going without getting lost.

As you walk past the cedar habitat and along the hydrangeas around the Dongbaek-gil Trail, you will find the upstream Donnaeko Valley where cool water flows.

The path created around the valley will make you feel as if you are trekking with nature and the cool water of the valley. If you walk past a signpost that says “Jungle Entrance” and a path full of ferns, you will find the signpost of Donnaeko, which is also the destination of the Dongbaek-gil Trail. (It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Cypress Forest to Donnaeko Valley).
