A Journey Across the IslandSightseeing on the Trip from Jeju City to Seogwipo

Many people start their Jeju vacation in Jeju City. It’s the perfect base for exploring the nature and culture of the island’s north side. But the southern part of the island has much to see too. If you choose to make the trip over Hallasan Mountain, why not make a day of your journey. The article will show you the best spots to visit as you travel from Jeju City in the north to Seogwipo City in the south. We’ll explore sights including Brick Campus, 1100 Altitude Wetland, Jungmun Beach, and more. Check out the video below for a preview of what to expect.

Interactive Museum and Jeju’s Highest Road1100 Road and Brick Campus

The 1100 Road connects the north and south of Jeju. The road got its name because it reaches an altitude of 1100 meters as it travels over Hallasan Mountain towards Jungmun Tourist Complex, a popular resort location. Soon after leaving Jeju City on this road you’ll come across Brick Campus. This is a brick art museum filled with around 250 toy brick sculptures. The museum is super colorful and has plenty of interactive exhibits, making it the perfect place for kids to explore and build their own creations. A highlight of the venue is the Brick Racing exhibit. Here kids can build cars and race them down a ramp. Brick Campus is home to a café that sells themed snacks and desserts, including a burger made with brick-shaped bread. Once you leave Brick Campus and continue on the 1100 Road, you’ll start to make your way up Hallasan Mountain. At the halfway point of your journey, you’ll find the 1100 Altitude Wetland, the highest point you can drive to on Jeju. This spot is a protected wetland area. Here you’ll find a short walking path that takes you through the area’s rich nature. In winter this spot’s altitude means it is often covered in snow. The fact that you can drive here makes it one of the easiest ways to enjoy snow on Jeju.

Southern Coastal HighlightsJungmun Saekdal Beach, The Cliff Café and Lounge, and Jusangjeolli Cliff

Jungmun Tourist Complex—home to some of Jeju’s biggest resorts—is located at the end of the 1100 Road. The area also has some of the island’s top tourist attractions. First up is Jungmun Saekdal Beach. This is a large strip of golden sand hidden from the island by the trees and cliffs that line the shore. It’s one of the island’s most popular beaches and is a great place to see the sea no matter what time of year you visit. If you head around 2km east from the beach, you’ll find Jusangjeolli Cliff—a striking example of the volcanic activity that formed Jeju. The cliff consists of multiple columns that rise out of the sea. Each one has straight edges, giving them the appearance of having been carved from rock. The water here is relatively deep and waves crash into the cliffs, creating one of Jeju’s more dramatic views.

The Cliff Jeju is the perfect spot if you need a break after all the sightseeing. This atmospheric seafront bar is located between Jungmun Beach and Jusangjeolli Cliff. It has a large outdoor seating area with plenty of comfy chairs for lounging. The menu has pizza, pasta, and burgers, as well as a selection of cocktails. There’s also indoor seating for when the weather isn’t quite right for being outside.

Experiencing Jeju’s Second CitySeogwipo Maeil Olle Market, Lee Jung-seop Street, and Jeongbang Falls

Seogwipo City is a short drive east from Jungmun Tourist Complex. The island’s southern city is home to some of its most popular tourist spots. Maeil Olle Market is a traditional market that opens every day. Inside you’ll find everything from fresh produce like fruit, veg, meat, and seafood to souvenirs that will remind you of your trip. The highlight is the stalls that sell tasty snacks you can eat right away. Look out for bottles of local mandarin juice in dolhareubang shaped bottles, spicy rice cake tteokbokki, fried chicken, black pork skewers, and chapssal sugar-coated rice donuts.

Once you’re full of Jeju treats, work the food off with a trip down Lee Jung-seop Street. This street in the center of Seogwipo is named after the famous painter Lee Jung-seop who called the city home in 1951 during the Korean War. The road is home to the Lee Jung-seop Art Museum. Here you’ll find works by the artist as well as other contemporary Korean painters. The area is also home to several boutiques that sell souvenirs to remind you of your time in Jeju.

The final stop in our tour is one of Jeju’s most famous stops: Jeongbang Falls. This is a 23-meter-high waterfall that crashes into the sea below, making it the only waterfall in Korea that drops directly into the sea. The waterfall is hidden away from the rest of the island by the tall cliffs that surround it. The only way to access the falls is via a steep set of stairs, but the view of the waterfall is more than worth it.
