Jeju National University is a notable university in Jeju due to its size, long history and its famously beautiful campus. The university was established in 1952 and is located in Jeju-si city. It offers fifty majors for undergraduates and has ten graduate schools across two campuses: Ara campus and Sara campus. The university also has other affiliates such as a general hospital and a laboratory. Ara campus is a beloved place where the locals like to visit for its natural and seasonal landscape. At the Ara campus you can find Jeju National University Museum which studies, preserves and displays the history, art and tradition of Jeju Island and other areas both within Korea and abroad.

Jeju National University Ara Campus

Though Ara campus a place for education it is also an increasingly popular place among the locals. This campus is very large and runs a shuttle bus during the semester. It is in an ideal location very close to Jeju-si city. You will quickly notice what season it is on the Ara campus from its beautiful distinct landscaping. There is a cafe named ‘Cafe Bombom(카페봄봄)’ (located at 105-1, Jejudaehak-ro) at the front gate of university, which sells a cup of coffee for only 1000won. While you drink your coffee, walk straight through the main gates, and to your left you will see the University Museum and a parking lot. This is the ideal place to begin an Ara campus tour. After visiting the museum, walk into the heart of the university campus. Here you will find the main library, the Law School and Ara Muse Hall. If you go to the second floor of Ara Muse Hall, you’ll see a cafe called ‘La Muse’. This cafe offers a magnificent view of the beautiful landscape of Jeju-si city and the ocean. Back near the main campus entrance you will find Global House which has convenient facilities. From there, you can check out the tennis courts near the staff apartments. You can easily find a path to go to Gwonje Oreum Volcanic Cone. A few years ago, people say roe deer often appeared in this area. If you try this walk you will experience the wonder and the beauty of nature. This is a leisurely walk.

Jeju National University Museum

Jeju National University Museum was established in 1967. With passion, the Museum collects traditional artifacts and primary historical sources, and participates in excavating and investigating cultural relics. It possesses about 400,000 artifacts. These artifacts offer an insight into the history of Jeju including lifestyle, religion, agriculture, fishery and ranching. Its building consists of three floors. The first floor has: Korean-Japanese on Jeju Island, and the History of Jeju National University. The second floor houses displays about the land and sea of Jeju, and the people of Jeju. Special exhibitions are shown on the third floor. You’ll understand and learn about Korea, the Korean people and Jeju Island. This museum can be visited free of charge.

The next part of the tour is the Meokbang Tour. To get there from the university: Catch a bus (number 360 or 365-1) from Jeju Daehakgyo (제주대학교) Station to Wonnohyeong (원노형) Station. Alternatively, catch bus 446 or 470-3 from Jeju Daehakgyo (제주대학교) Station to Nohyeong Ogeori (노형오거리) station. This will take around 40 minutes.

Meokbang is the new trend originating in Korea where people broadcast through a webcam while they eat, for the pleasure of their viewers (who sometimes pay for the privilege!) The Meokbang Tour takes its name from this phenomenon - it simply refers to travelling to eat; to experience new types of food in new places. A great way to do this is to eat at convenience stores. Don't be put off: these days, convenience stores in Korea are a wonderful place to try quality food that you might find at a cafe or restaurant, but at a reasonable price. Triangle Gimbap is triangle-shaped rice wrapped with seaweed. Inside, there are ingredients like chicken, tuna, mayonnaise, or mixed vegetable. Some are spicy - be careful!

Instant cup noodles are very convenient to cook. Just poor hot water and wait for 3 or 5 minutes. There are various combined concepts and flavors in instant cup noodles like Korean soup noodles, cheese noodles, spaghetti, and noodles without soup.

You can also get a brick of instant noodles (in a square packet) and prepare it that way. In Korea this is called ‘bongji ramyeon’. You can buy a square-shaped foil plate with it as well, and cook it in a machine. With this method you will get more and thicker noodles. Cup noodles are easier to prepare, but now you can experience homecook-style instant noodles in convenience stores. You can also add ingredients like egg, sprouts, or ham which are available from the store as well. When Koreans eat instant noodles, they usually have it with kimchi, traditonal spicy pickled Chinese cabbages. You can purchase single serves of packed kimchi at convenience stores.

Dosirak is a Korean boxed lunch. It generally consists of rice and some side dishes. Goes perfectly with instant soup.

Hot bar is a fried snack usually made with minced fish, salt, and other seasoning. The name comes from a Japanese brand and can be translated roughly as ‘fish cake bar’.

Why not try some milk? There are so many flavors available. All the normal flavors are here: plain milk, strawberry milk, chocolate milk, coffee milk and banana milk. But you will be surprised at the many novelty milk flavors on offer such as banana and turmeric milk, lemon and lime milk, salty caramel milk, cotton candy milk, toffee nut milk, various grain milks, various nut milks, watermelon milk, melon milk, butter milk, mango milk, papaya milk, avocado milk, cheese milk, sweet potato milk, peach milk and so on. There is a perfect milk flavor for everyone in Jeju!

‘Pyeonmaek’ is a compound word of Pyeoneujeom which means ‘convenience store’ and Maekju which means ‘beer’. Pyonmaek literally means beer bought in a convenience store. Koreans are famous for their fondness of drink. Koreans frequently go to a local pub and drink alcohol together after work. It is a core part of Korean social culture. However, due to rising prices and more competitive society, many Koreans now just stop by a convenience store, buy beer and drink it alone or with friends sitting at a small table outside the front of the store. If you drink beer like this you can save a lot of money compared to going to a pub or a bar. Pyeonmaek is often seen in Korean TV dramas. Koreans especially do this in the summer rather than winter. If the weather is nice this is a wonderful experience! Please remember that you can only drink outside the store.

In winter, baked sweet potatoes, fish cake and Hobbang are popular as well. Korean sweet potatoes are yellowish and sweet, especially when baked. Fish cake is minced fish mixed with seasoning and flour to make a batter, deep-fried and then boiled. Generally it can be found at stalls on the street, but you can try it at a convenience store too. Hobbang is hot-served steamed bun usually filled with red bean paste. You can also find hobbang with other fillings such as vegetable stuffing or pizza flavor.

Nohyeong-dong is a very new and trendy downtown area of Jeju. If you walk the streets in this area, you’ll find many trendy and fancy shops and cafes. You can enjoy the visual experience for free. Have a look after eating in a convenience store.

The next part of the tour is Dumaengi Alley. To get there from Nohyeong-dong: Catch a bus (number 310-2 or 325-1)From Nohyeong Ogeori (노형오거리) Station to Jejudong Chodeung Hakgyo (제주동초등학교) Station. This will take about 40 minutes.

Dumaengi(Dumengi) Alley is a hidden tour spot which was a very underdeveloped town in the past. A variety of murals have been painted in the area, as part of an initiative called Garden of Memories and Dumaengi Alley Project. You will find numbers on the ground indicating the order in which the murals should be viewed. Follow the orange line which will lead you in the right sequence. This town is not just a tour spot: the locals still live here so please respect this area; keep it clean and take your rubbish with you. You can freely take photos, but refrain from making too much noise. You'll see lots of different murals, each with its own different theme. It doesn’t look fancy or luxurious, but you’ll travel to the time of old memories while going for a leisurely walk. This tour typically takes around 40 minutes.

The next part of the tour is Jeju National Museum. To get there: Catch a bus (number 325-1, 316, 410-1, 310-2, or 350-1) from Jejudong Chodeung Hakgyo (제주동초등학교) Station and get off at Goeunimor Gukrip Jeju Bakmulgwan (고으니모르 국립제주박물관) Station. This will take around 15 minutes.

The story of Jeju is a rich chapter in the history of Korea. Opened in 2001, Jeju National Museum is the place to learn about the history of Jeju. The museum has permanent exhibitions including outdoor exhibits, and frequently hosts special exhibitions. Through these exhibitions you will learn about the whole history of Jeju, starting at prehistoric times including the geography of the island, through Jeju’s history as an independent kingdom called Tamna, and Tamna’s subjugation by the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties from the Korean peninsula. You will also learn about the people of Jeju and their every-day lives.
Try out the Museum’s Hands-on Experience Corner, where you will find exciting learning experiences that will connect you with traditional Jeju culture. You can try activities such as stone rubbing, woodblock printing, ancient painting puzzles, and assembling models of ancient Jeju buildings and pagodas. Jeju National Museum also frequently hosts events and performances, especially during major holidays.

The next part of the tour is Tapdong Theme Street. To get there: Catch a bus (number 316, 310-2, 350-1 or 325-1) from Gukrip Jeju Bakmulgwan (국립제주박물관) Station and get off at Dongmun Rotary (동문로터리 ) Station. This will take around 20 minutes.

Located at the most northern side of Jeju Island, Tapdong Theme Street is a long path along the breakwater, about 1950m, which was created by reclaiming land from the sea. The locals often visit it to see street performers and cultural events or exhibitions, to jog, walk, play sports, or just see the ocean. It is a beautiful place to stroll at night. There are a lot of raw fish restaurants in this area. There is Tapdong Square which has Tapdong Seaside Concert Hall where you can enjoy performances accompanied by a salty sea breeze. You’ll find sculptures of a whale, an octopus, and a diver. If you still have enough energy to walk, this walk is strongly recommended. You can experience an amazing sunset and night-time landscape.
