- Andeok-myeon, even better to stroll about in the fallA Walk in a Jeju Village <Autumn-Andeok-myeon> (Part 1)
The autumn season quietly arrives on Jeju. And the cool sea breeze blowing in the distance under the high and clear sky seems to herald the beginning of the last stages of the year.
This episode will introduce Andeok-myeon, the area where Sanbangsan Mountain and Yongmeori Coast are located. With so many attractions, it’s worth taking the time to carefully study its charm.
In Part 1 of "A Walk in a Jeju Village - Andeok-myeon," we will introduce the places that are most beautiful in fall and restaurants that cook seasonal ingredients.
Daepyeong-ri is a pleasant village of Andeok-myeon to walk in under the soft autumn sunlight. As you walk around this area called Nandeureu, which means a wide field in Jeju dialect, you will come across Baksugijeong Cliffs, which will immediately make your jaw drop.
Baksugijeong, 130 m high and 1,500 m long, has a magnificent aura, almost looking like a big folding screen. The name means a cliff from which you can scoop up spring water to drink. In the past, when water was scarce in Jeju, this place was like a ray of hope. In fact, there is a spring under the coastal cliff from which water springs up all year round.
If you want to look at Baksugijeong at a glance, we recommend you go to the lighthouse at Daepyeong Port.
When you enter Daepyeong Port, the end of Olle Route 8 and the starting point of Route 9, you can see the picturesque scenery of Baksugijeong. Just looking at it will make you feel refreshed and forget about the hot summer days.
It is great to climb a mountain that almost touches the blue sky, or to walk along the shore while listening to the sound of the crashing waves. Walking down the friendly country lane, you will find even the stone walls are entertaining.
You can actually meet this romantic scenery on the geo trail themed around the sights and stories of the surrounding villages, Sagye-ri, Hwasun-ri, and Deoksu-ri, centered on Sanbangsan Mountain and Yongmeori Coast.
Geo Trail refers to a walking path created by combining various stories of the history, culture, and life of nearby villages using the unique geological resources of the volcanic Jeju Island.
The Sanbangsan Mountain and Yongmeori Coast Geo Trail is divided into three courses:
Course A (2 km, 1.5 hr course) that walks around Yongmeori Coast, Sanbang Smoke Mound and Sanbanggulsa Temple, Course B (2.5 km, 1.5 hr course) that goes through Sagye Port and walks inside the village, and Course C (5.7 km, 2.5 hr course) that starts from Sanbang Smoke Mound and follows along Hwanguchi Beach.
Walk slowly while taking in the wonderful and beautiful scenery created by nature.
A small, quiet beach located below Sanbangsan Mountain, Sagye Beach is different from other beaches in Jeju. Instead of a sandy beach, it has a coastal topography where sand is deposited, and long sand dunes are developed along the coastline.
At low tide, when the water recedes, moss-covered volcanic rocks appear above the water surface, and you can easily find marine potholes created by erosion by waves. Take the best shot of your life here, with the unusual terrain creating an exotic mood.
Surrounded by forests on all sides, Gunsan Volcanic Cone is not easily noticeable. Because of the two peaks shaped like army barracks, the volcanic cone was given the name Gunsan (Army Mountain).
It has an altitude of 334.5 m, and it is one of the rare volcanic cones in Jeju where you can drive almost up to the top. However, since it’s the best season to enjoy walking up the volcanic cone, we recommend taking time to look around the scenery and slowly climb to the top. It is only a short and sweet 30-minute walk to the top of the volcanic cone.
Can you believe that you will see Hallasan Mountain and Sanbangsan Mountain on top of the whole Seogwipo area, “Nandeureu”, and even Gapado and Marado Islands in the distance? The scenery of Jeju from Gunsan Volcanic Cone feels different from the view of the ocean seen on the ground. It would be worthwhile to take a seat and slowly enjoy the scenery. The fall breeze and the distant view from the volcanic cone will bring peace to your heart.
The taste of Jeju buckwheat, created by the wind, sunlight and precipitation conditions of Hallasan Mountain, is on offer at Jeju Island Farmers. This is a place run by the residents of Gwangpyeong-ri, the smallest but the highest village in Jeju. It offers a variety of dishes using buckwheat they have grown and seasonal ingredients.
The signature menu here is Bibijakjak Noodles. Bibijakjak is a word in Jeju dialect that describes a child doodling with fun. Various ingredients such as seasonal greens from Jeju, fragrant whole perilla, and perilla oil are served atop buckwheat noodles like a piece of artwork.
Toss the toppings well into the noodles. The pleasantly bitter taste, the subtle aroma of buckwheat, and then the savory flavor spread in your mouth, instantly satisfying your taste buds. Take note that the café also run by the restaurant serves drinks made of buckwheat.

BISTRO Nang is a small restaurant located between Gunsan Volcanic Cone and Andeok Valley. Nang is a Jeju dialect that means tree. It is a cozy and rustic space that embraces the taste of the owner who likes cooking and wood. The restaurant offers Jeju local food and Italian cuisine made with seasonal ingredients.
The signature dish made with seasonal ingredients is updated each month. You can check the new menu on BISTRO Nang’s Instagram account. Since the restaurant is run by the owner alone, a reservation is a must. If you plan to visit, remember to make a call to reserve a table.

At the entrance of an alley in Seogwang-ri is a place where you can enjoy a neat and warm meal, located on the corner of what used to be a tangerine field.
The restaurant has three simple menus: “So Set,” a light, healthy casual brunch meal, “Gyu Set,” a fun, interesting fusion dish, and “Mo Set,” a Korean homemade meal prepared by the ingredients and mother's recipe. Each menu represents the characteristics of the owners, the couple, So-yeong and Gyu-hyeong, and the mother. The concept for each set meal is kept the same, but the menu changes slightly depending on the season because they use seasonal ingredients.
Once you have finished your meal, take a walk around outside Sogyumo Table. The annex building next to the restaurant hosts pop-up stores. For some visitors, it may be a bookstore, and for others, it may be a flower shop.
Who knows what the next pop-up store will be about? It might be fun to find out in person.
