The famous tourist spots in Jeju—Sanbangsan Mountain Yongmeori Coast, Jungmun Tourist Complex Cheonjeyeon Falls and Jusangjeolli Cliff, Cheonjiyeon Falls and Jeongbang Falls in Seogwipo City, and the Citrus Museum—are famous for their beautiful scenery that you cannot miss during a trip to Jeju. With their reasonable entrance fees, those places are must-go spots that satisfy both cost-effectiveness and satisfaction-effectiveness.
[Recommended course] Sanbangsan Mountain Yongmeori Coast → Cheonjeyeon Falls → Jusangjeolli Cliff → Citrus Museum → Jeongbang Falls → Cheonjiyeon Falls
About 800,000 years ago, lava erupted, breaking through the land of Jeju. The lava got stacked thickly around the area.
And the lava kept flowing and stacking on top of that, creating the lava dome. And after long years of erosion process by the salty sea wind and sea waves, the Sanbang Mountain’s current shape has been formed.
Located beneath the Sanbangsan Mountain, the Yongmeori Coast is the oldest volcanic edifice in Jeju, which has an even longer history than Sanbangsan Mountain. Take a walk on the volcanic-stratigraphic Yongmeori Coast with its long history and the path created by the erosion process by the wave, and observe the unique and mystic nature of Jeju.
Boasting its great height and majesty, Cheonjeyeon Falls provides different views along with its top, middle, and low falls, all connected. There is a legend that seven fairies, who served the Great Jade Emperor of the heaven, came down to earth and had a bath in Cheonjeyeon Falls. Let’s go to this beautiful falls where fairies stayed. Its emerald pond and the amazing view of Jusangjeolli reflected on the surface of the water make people admire it naturally.
It is a museum that incorporates the history, varieties, and cultivation methods of Jeju tangerine through exhibitions and video references. Outside, there is the oldest Watson pomelo tree in Jeju. Watson pomelo tangerine is typically eaten in the summer and has strong acid with big chunks, making it suitable for marmalade. The tree is grown from the seed received from Kim Hongjip, the leader of the Gabo Reform of 1894.
The Citrus Museum has permanent exhibitions, the world’s citrus cultivating glass greenhouse, a citrus experience section, and a subtropical plant exhibition. You can find various citrus trees all over the world, including 12 different varieties of Jeju’s native tangerine, and some subtropical trees like papaya, banana, mango, etc. You can also have a tangerine foot bath using the dried tangerine peel powder.
Jeongbang Falls is the only fall in Korea that falls directly into the sea from land. As walking down the stairs with pine trees next to the ticket box, you can see the sunlight shimmering on the sea like a galaxy.
You can hear the sound of the falls from far away, and the Jusangjeolli rock walls on both sides of the falls make for an amazing view. This waterfall, coming down from Hallasan Mountain, running through Seogwipo City, and falling into the sea, is not as grand as famous waterfalls in other countries, but its neat look of falling reminds us of traditional sumi-e paintings, which create harmony with nature.
Let’s find a small tent around the entrance of Jeongbang Falls. It is a place where you can enjoy fresh seafood, run by Jeju’s Halmang (grandmother). There is no table, though. Just take a seat on a flat rock and enjoy the seafood while looking at the ocean. It certainly is another joy of the trip you can find.
Compared to other areas, Seogwipo has lots of spring water and falls. And the best waterfall in Seogwipo in terms of size and scenery is the Cheonjiyeon Falls. It is 1km long in total, 22m in height, 12m in width, and 20m in depth, and it has always been a famous tourist spot.
The waterfall itself is beautiful, of course, but the surrounding environment, including the dense forest, installation art pieces, and trail roads, will also make for a great photoshoot location. Along with the waterfall, the dense forest with Siebold's chinquapins and camellias gives a cool feeling even in the summer. This forest is a sample region preserving the original form of nature and is protected as a natural reserve.
Let’s go to Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff, filled with nature’s awe. Along with the unique landscape of Jusangjeolli, the emerald ocean creates an exotic scenery. The way the rock pillars with traces of time appear and disappear as the wave hits becomes more and more mystical as you see.
The hexagon-shaped rock pillars, layer after layer, formed by the contraction of lava as it flowed and cooled down, make an unbelievable view. The majestic cliff is definitely an art piece created by nature. The Jusangjeolli seen between pine trees also makes a great photogenic moment. The scenery of the Jusangjeolli, with its frame of dense green, looks almost like a piece of traditional real landscape painting.
