An Enjoyable Journey to the Southwest of JejuJeju Road Trips: Six Fun Spots on the Pyeonghwa-ro

Jeju City and the island’s southwest are two of the island’s most popular areas. The former is home to the island’s hustle and bustle: you’ll find plenty of hotels, restaurants, museums, markets, and more. The southwest is quieter but contains major attractions like Jeju Shinhwa World and Sanbangsan Mountain. If you plan to make the trip between the two areas, you’ll likely do so via the Pyeonghwa-ro: a road with plenty of interesting attractions to stop at along the way. Here are six places to visit to turn the journey into a fun road trip.

A Forgotten Door into an Alternate WorldNohyung Supermarket

Nohyung Supermarket is one of Jeju’s newest attractions. It’s a multimedia art show that takes visitors on a journey through a secret world. The premise of the gallery is that there are doors that connect our world to the world of myths, fairy tales, and imagination. As time passed, the story says that most of these doors were forgotten, until one was discovered in Nohyung Supermarket. The actual exhibition is made up of five themed rooms. The first is a recreation of a small supermarket. Except everything in it is black and white because the hidden door absorbed all the color. The illusion is convincing and seeing things you recognize with the color removed is an eerie experience. Towards the back of this room is the door that takes you to the new world. While the supermarket is black and white, the alternate world exhibits all use light to create colorful visual experiences. It’s a fun concept and theme, and each of the artworks is highly immersive. If you’re looking for a place to take unique photos of your trip to Jeju, this is a good option. And once you finish walking around, the venue also has a café where you can stop and enjoy a drink and a gift shop.

Panoramic Views over the Jeju CountrysideSaebyeol Oreum Volcanic Cone

Saebyeol Oreum is one of the many volcanic hills that are spread across Jeju Island. It is one of the most popular due to the incredible views you get out over the surrounding area. It also has a large car park, and its location just off a major road makes it easy to access. The hill is instantly recognizable due to its shape, which has two small peaks. At 119 meters high (519 meters above sea level), the walk to the summit only takes around 30 minutes. The climb is steep on the way up, but the well-maintained path helps hikers reach the top. The views from the summit make the climb worth it. Hike during the day for clear views over the surrounding countryside. You can see as far as the sea on a clear day. The views are especially impressive if you hike during sunset, as you’ll see the sun drop below you. In fall the oreum is covered in silver grass, making the whole hill appear to sway in the wind. Saebyeol Oreum is also the location of the Fire Festival at the start of spring.

From Ducks to EaglesJeju Flower Bird Park

Jeju Flower Bird Park is an outdoor space where you can view flowers, birds, and animals. The space offers several programs that let you interact with the animals. For example, you can feed the park’s alpacas, ducks, and rabbits directly. One of the park’s biggest highlights is the birds of prey zone, which is home to several animals. The park even puts on a flight show four times a day that shows the predators in action. Another fun area is the glass greenhouse. Here you’ll find the park’s flock of colorful parrots.
