It's good to be together, but even better off aloneGreat dine-alone places that offer great taste and atmosphere

It's great to travel in company, but traveling alone certainly gives more freedom and is comfortable in many ways. You get to choose the locations, plans, and transportation means however you like it. You get to eat and rest whenever you like and go wherever you want. All these benefits are pretty much enjoyable, but discovering great places to eat alone will make your travel all the more fun. We want to introduce some great places to dine solo in Jeju for those wishing to travel alone.

A bite of steak made from the best-quality tenderloin<Hamoribap>, a place run by a chef with 17 years of experience
하모리밥

This is where the chef made his dream of running a restaurant in his hometown Moseulpo came true after 17 years of time at a hotel's western cuisine division. Hamoribap is a restaurant located near Unjin Harbor's ferry terminal, where there are numerous passengers who are bound for Gapado and Marado Islands. The chef, who is also the owner, visited many restaurants in his 2 years of preparation before opening. The backpackers traveling and eating alone led him to think that a restaurant where people can comfortably eat alone would be good, and that has been reflected in his restaurant's interior design. The neatly arranged interior is quite impressive. The chef's wife, an interior designer, took charge of the design. It's hard to miss her efforts which went into every corner of the place. The calm scenery of Hamori, Daejeong-eup is visible at a glance when you sit at the bar table. It hides the view of a cemetery right out front, instead, revealing the beautiful village. It is a picture-perfect work that displays craftsmanship.

It is a seaside village famous for its yellowtail, so the chef tried to create dishes on the menu that do not include fish. The representative menu is Hamori pork steak, made from the highest-quality pork neck and sold only in limited supplies. There is also a crab curry that you can enjoy with Hamoribap rice. The pork steak is not for sale if the highest quality of meat is unavailable. The crab curry is a pu pad pong-style curry tweaked to Korean tastes. All dishes come neatly arranged on a tray.

A feast of a meal placed on a round floor tableNeat and Simple, <Danso>
단소

A homemade-style restaurant that opened this February in a village located just outside the Aewol seaside. The name "Danso" takes each syllable from the words "danjeong (neat)" and "sobak (simple)." The owner of the restaurant used to run a hand-weaving craft shop with a meal service called “Aewol House Table” in the form of a pop-up store. Customer reception of the meals exceeded expectations, so the owner decided to open his/her own restaurant. It came naturally for the owner as he/she liked cooking in the first place and had a hobby of collecting plates.

Every day, the restaurant serves different side dishes to customers using local seasonal ingredients. They aim to use minimal additives to serve a healthy meal. It started with the idea of helping tourists take a break from the typical cutlassfish and grilled pork, and instead opting for a homemade meal. What distinguishes them is that they serve dishes such as boiled mackerel, egg rolls, and pork stir-fry on a round floor table. All dishes including the pork stir-fry are refillable. The vintage floor table is a fun twist. The restaurant wanted something that was not mainland and more Jeju. They found one at a local market and decided to use it as a customer table. They only sell 50 servings a day, closing when ingredients run out. The restaurant does not accept reservations and operates on a first-come-first-served basis.

A meal like one from your motherServed with heart and soul, <Sunitable>
수니테이블

This is a great place to eat for solo travelers in need of a hearty, homemade meal like one you would have from your mother. Sunitable is a restaurant that opened last February in a residential area in Hadori Village, which is near a beautiful east coast sea. It was renovated from a western-style house with a blue roof so you can dine in a warm and homey ambiance. When you pass the neatly organized front yard into the inner part of the restaurant, there is a large table where multiple people can sit. Counter seating is placed under the window in the room to the side. This area is suitable for solo diners to look out the window and view the front yard while eating. The small decorations and the woody interior adds to the peaceful setting.

There are abundant dishes on the menu with ingredients that feature the characteristics of Jeju, such as pork neck and rib rice, abalone bibimbap, green tangerine pork stir fry, black pork fried rice, rice topped with fried cuttlefish, and pork backbone stew. The restaurant uses no synthetic seasoning, but their specially made seasoning adds flavor. The clean plating and no excess of side dishes make the meal just right. They also sell tteokbokki as a side menu. Tteokbokki with assorted fries is enough to satisfy customers in search of a well-prepared meal. There is an intricately decorated photo zone outside for you to take memorable pictures.

A thick pork cutlet in a sweet sandwichMade from Black Pork, <Aewol Donkatsu>
애월돈가스집

Aewol Handam Coastal Trail is famous not only for strolling along the seaside but also for its tourist attractions such as the Monsant de Aewol and Café Bomnal. There is a restaurant hidden in the quiet corner of a village trodden with tourists. Aewol Donkatsu is a restaurant that remodeled a western-style house, but it maintained as much of the original interior as possible for its retro vibe. It has the familiar simplicity of old bricks, wooden window sills, and wooden shoe closets, reminding you of your grandmother’s home. It goes well with the simple menu of a pork cutlet, too.

Pork cutlets are the main menu here. The dishes made of Jeju black pork are most popular among visitors. The king pork cutlet and pork cutlet sandwich are the signature dishes. The king pork cutlet is made from black pork, and the sandwich holds a thick fried pork patty. In particular, the pork cutlet sandwich has a sweet taste. It uses slices of bread spread with strawberry jam, and the pork cutlet goes in between them. Besides pork cutlets, they also serve spaghetti and cheese oven potato fried rice. You can dine in either one of two rooms with tables, or the main hall. They installed counter seats by the window, so you can enjoy a comfortable meal by yourself while looking across the front yard out of the window. It's hidden between houses, so be sure to navigate your way with a map.
