A Walk in a Jeju VillageWinter in Namwon-eup (Part 2)

In continuation of <Winter in Namwon-eup Part 1>, in which various spots for winter sightseeing and cafés in the southern villages of Jeju were introduced, Part 2 will explore places where you can experience hearty meals to fill up your hunger in cold and one-day classes that you can enjoy indoor. First, have a tasty meal made of Jeju's ingredients such as red-banded lobsters, stone octopus, and pork. Then, work off your meal by keeping your hands busy making something memorable. A travel course like this will surely present a special time out of what could be otherwise a long, monotonous winter.

① Bagyong Sikdang

Bagyong Sikdang is a restaurant where 30 servings of a single set menu are prepared and served each day. The place used to be in business in Hyodon for 4 years and a half. This January, it moved next to its Wimi-ri neighbors, “Labas Books" and "Hikerhaus Vovo." The owner made up the interior of the new place for business to his craft. Perhaps that's why it still gives a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere as the old place did.

It usually opens at 11 in the morning and closes around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Ingredients may run out quickly on days where customers flood in. We recommend you reserve in advance if you are visiting as a group or from afar. The menu changes every Tuesday. It is composed of a main dish, soup, and side dishes that go together well. The main dishes are usually meat, such as stir-fry cheese tandoori chicken, beef chuck flap tail steak, and sliced beef loin stir-fried with green bean sprouts and water celery. The menu is posted on the restaurant's Instagram (@bagyong_).

Since the restaurant is run by the owner alone, he develops the menu with cooking time in mind. But he also cares not to make his dishes just give bland taste and seeks to give a special kick. It's a good place to eat alone too. If I were to live nearby, I would go here every week to taste the changing menu.

② Here In Jeju Ramyeon

Located right in front of the Taeheung ri seashore, Here In Jeju Ramyeon literally is a place that sells ramyeon. But it's not any ramyeon. They come with a load of red-banded lobsters, crabs, mussels, and clams. There are many dishes on their menu such as the cream ramyeon and hangover ramyeon. But the most popular dish is “Red-banded Lobster Lunch,” which is ramyeon served with red-banded lobster sashimi shelled to make it easier to eat.  Being able to enjoy fresh red-banded lobsters in such a unique way probably is a privilege you could experience only in Jeju.

The second-most popular dish at Here in Jeju Ramyeon is salmon ochazuke. It is a dish where you pour warm tea over rice topped with grilled salmon. I was curious to know how it would taste as it was a dish not easy to come by. It turned out the clean fragrance of tea and savory salmon went well together. If you miss a warm soup in the cold winter, try visiting here. Check for closing dates posted on a monthly basis on its Instagram (@here_in._.jeju)

Mimi Pasta is located near Soisoggak, on a trail passing Olle trail route 5. The view of mandarin trees you see through the tall window offers a very warm atmosphere. The owner couple used to run an Italian restaurant called ""Kitchen in Sehwa"" for 5 years. As tourists flocked to the east coast in droves, they decided to find a quieter place to stay, and Harye-ri was their choice.

The pasta place offers dishes that allow you to taste fresh Jeju seafood, such as octopus pilaf and red-banded lobster rosé pasta. Now they are preparing to introduce a new, top-shell-based dish. Within just half a year since its opening, Mimi Pasta went viral on social media and now is frequently queued up at lunchtime. Please note that you can have menus to go, and reservation is feasible for dinner. Business hours and menu are available on its Instagram (@mimi.pasta).

① Hwamokhae

Hwamokhae is a plant shop. The name combines the syllables hwa (flower), mok (tree), and hae (together) to mean flowers and trees growing together. It may feel a little unfamiliar as the place is different from flower shops we normally think of. Simply put, it is a place that sells various plants with the owner recommending the ones that best match the customer's lifestyle and preferences.

CEO Kim Si-nae majored in landscaping and had worked in relevant fields in Seoul for pretty much throughout her career. She worked for a company even after she had moved to Jeju in 2017, and then finally came to have a place of her own. You can feel her distinctive vibes from the vintage furniture, lighting, and decorative items that fill this space. Recommendations from a person like her would even make a person who had no interest in the world of plantation want to get a plant pot.

The one-day classes take place in the inner part of the shop, and a wreath-making class will open soon. She promised to pack your wreath seamlessly so as not to damage it on your flight back. So sign up for the class if you are interested in plants. Check in advance the availability on Instagram (@hwamokhae) as opening hours vary from time to time due to her business off the shop.

Wimi Shop is a stained-glass craft shop where you can make various items out of glass. Mobile probably is the easiest one to make. With the design schematics prepared, you can make the item from the options that come in different shapes, which include the ones reflective of Jeju characteristics such as dolphins, shells, and camellias, and other usual shapes such as houses, trees, cats, clouds, the moon, and stars. It usually takes three to three and a half hours to finish. Once you choose the glass pieces of various colors and patterns and start focusing on cutting and pasting them together, time will fly and you will find your item finished in any minute.  No need to worry even if you are clumsy with your hands. The class is easy to follow even for beginners.

Now that you know the fun of glass crafting, take it a step further by making mini lightings. You do not necessarily have to participate in the one-day class to get hands on glass items. You can order a custom-made product or a finished good. The class is available in reservation only, so please reach out in advance. (Instagram @jjjunggg_)

“Indigoterie” is French for a place where indigo is manufactured. It literally is a place where clothing materials are died in indigo and made into outfits. Indigoterie is the atelier of the owner, who has been working up her career as a fashion designer in fashion hubs like Paris and Shanghai. CEO Shim Eung-beom, who developed a desire to open his own business as he grew tired of the fast-paced environment that forced him into producing new clothes every season, had long been preparing to settle down in Jeju. He found a mandarin warehouse that looked like two buildings connected to each other He is now using one side as a café and showroom, and the other as a space for his classes and workshop.

You can experience silkscreen printing here. You would draw out a picture of your choice and stamp it onto a canvas bag or T-shirt. It varies per person but usually takes about three to four hours. Classes open on Wednesdays when the café is closed. At the café, you can enjoy hand drip coffees and teas made from wild Jeju herbs. Here, you can also discover Mr. Shim's years’ worth of collection of military products and workwear, his handmade clothes and hats, as well as pictures and pottery by Jeju's artists working in various fields. Jindo dogs “Jolie” and “Terie” will come to greet you as well. (Instagram @indigoterie)
