One-day classesSpecial Jeju Gifts Made With Your Own Hands

Is there a gift that is as valuable as making it yourself with your own time and effort? On days when you just don't want to go anywhere on your trip, or when you want to stay indoors due to bad or cold weather, one-day classes are the best option.

The one-day class allows you to spend time making meaningful gifts to commemorate Jeju. Here are the one-day classes that you can enjoy for great work to give it to your loved one or to yourself, regardless of whether you have golden hands for crafts or a poop hand that lacks skills for art.

Various art experiences such as acrylic, pastel, and pen drawingWe were all painters <All Souls Drawing Lab>
올소울즈

The name “All Souls Drawing Lab” contains the wish to become a drawing lab for everyone. The instructor, who graduated from the Department of Engraving Print at Hongik University, opened and operated the first drawing class in Buam-dong in 2011 and moved to the island in February 2020 to open a class in Napeup-ri starting in May. The instructor majored in art, taught students for over 15 years, and has been involved in various activities such as making picture books with children with cancer, so you can learn to paint various styles of painting. The class lasts about 2 hours, and you can choose the tools and drawing you want to use from the prepared materials such as acrylic, pastel, oil pastel, pencil, and pen. If you have a picture or image you wish to draw, think of it in advance and bring it to class.

In the case of acrylic painting, you can sketch with a pencil, then imagine the seasons and emotions in your head, and choose the color that best suits the picture. For those who are not familiar with painting, it is not easy to decide on a color, but the class is not so difficult because the instructor helps you when making decisions on drawing a sketch or combining colors. It is best to paint with the joy of action rather than the pressure to draw well.

Classes can be booked through Instagram. Not only one-day classes, but there are also regular classes for Jeju residents. It is located inside the “Café 36.5 Degrees Summer Jeju, Southern Branch” in Napeup-ri, a quiet mid mountainous village, so you can enjoy delicious coffee or food before and after class.

Watch out for the beauty projected through sunlightGlass art <Dansooon>
단순

How many people will open their hearts to the word simple (pronounced “dansoon” in Korean)? This is a place where people who dream of simplicity can forget about their complex thoughts for a while, and based on the idea of living a simple life during her move to Jeju suggests the reason for its name. The instructor, who initially came to stay here for just two months and ended up moving here, chose glass art as the profession for a simple life. Originally, she made and sold accessories, but after receiving a lot of inquiries about glass art classes, it naturally led to a class.

The class is surprisingly simple. If you simply draw the shape or image you want to make into glass and send it, the instructor will find the color that matches it and cut the glass. Wrap a thin copper tape around the side of the glass to make it smooth so it is not sharp. After wrapping all sides of the glass with copper tape, you need to spread it out well so that there are no wrinkles, but to make a clean solder, you need to press the copper tape carefully and spread it out well. After that, heat the lead on the soldering iron and attach it to the place where the copper tape is adhered to finish.

Since the instructor helps you during class from time to time, you don't have to worry if you don't have the dexterity or are weak in details. The key point is to choose the right shape you want to make. You can also write on the glass or engrave it using tape. Once you finish, connect and shine it in the sunlight to show off your own souvenir that emits beautiful colors.

Make Tewak (calabash buoy), the symbol of haenyeo (female diver), with rattanRattan Workshop <Aurda>
아우르다

How about making Tewak of a haenyeo, the symbol of Jeju, using rattan? There are many items that can be made from rattan, such as lampshades, chairs, fans, household items, and accessories, but Tewak seems to be a special souvenir. It is especially meaningful because it is made in the Rattan workshop, which was opened by a daughter of a haenyeo mother.

Aurda, located in downtown Nohyeong-dong, Jeju-si, is a workshop that opened in January 2020 and is popular among local residents as it is located in the center of the city. In addition to one-day classes for those who want to try making rattan in a short time, there are classes for hobbies, instructors, and children.

There are a variety of props that can be made using rattan, but it is also possible to choose what you wish to make. Class time varies depending on the size and difficulty of the props, but basically, you can finish a piece of work in about 2 - 3 hours. The thin rattan lead is called rattan core, and the rattan core, which has been moistened with water and softened, is used as the blade to put up a pillar, and the shape of a basket is formed by weaving it as if filling the sides with other rattan cores. It is important to give your hands constant strength because if you apply too much strength to your hands, they are weaved tightly and become loose. If you hang a net-like thread on a tewak, the female diver's Tewak is completed. It is work that requires high concentration, and you will realize that two or three hours have passed quickly if you focus on weaving rattan one by one without thinking.

플로레스타

You must have dreamed of making your own desks or furniture at least once in your life. Making large pieces or elegant and sophisticated furniture takes a long time of mastery and talent, but there are simple things that can be made using small pieces of wood to make your dream of carpentry come true. Spoons, chopsticks, cutting boards, butter knives, forks, yogurt spoons, muddlers, and other everyday items that you use at the table are not difficult to use, so they present joy every time you use them.

The “Floresta Workshop” located in Jocheon is operated by an individual who has naturally entered the path of woodworking, watching his parents who have worked with wood in Jeju for 25 and 17 years, respectively. The workshop opened up a year ago and has been conducting one-day classes for the past three months, but it is a shop-in-shop of the ZIP Tree School, a woodworking experience center operated by his parents.

Wood carving alone takes about an hour and a half, and wood carving using a jigsaw and making it yourself from scratch takes more than two hours. If you bring a photo of the product you want to make, you can create it as it is. These days, it is trendy to use dark walnut wood, and you can sketch a picture of the desired shape onto the wood, cut the wood, shape it with a knife, and then sand it to shape it. After finishing it with fine sandpaper, imprint the wood with a burning pen to write letters, and then apply walnut oil to the finished product.
