Jeju spring festivals

Spring blossoms are not the only thing you can enjoy in Jeju in spring. With the weather getting warmer a lot of different festivals are held around the island. Some of them track back to the oldest local traditions of the islanders. Jeju islanders have always been dependent on nature so it was important to greet the spring properly so the whole year could be prosperous and fruitful.

"Light up the world with wild fire and dreams" Jeju Fire festival

The 23rd Jeju Fire Festival is going to be held in 2020. But the festival history goes back even further. The festival is believed to have originated from an old pastoral cultural practice called "banggae," in which the mountainous grasslands were lit on fire to control pests and initiate growth of new grass. In addition, the fire was also thought to keep evil spirits away for the whole year. This festival marks the agricultural traditions of Jeju people and the shamanistic beliefs that are still practiced around the island. During the festival the 300,000 square meter Saebyeol Oreum is lit on fire. The spectacular view will stay in your memory for a lifetime. The festival has gained many awards and attracts more than 300,000 visitors from all around the world.

12th Gapado Green Barley Festival

Gapado is an island and the southernmost point of South Korea. Getting to the island takes around 20 minutes on a ferry from Moseulpo Port in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo City. Locals in Gapado mostly live from fishing but the island is also famous for its barley fields. Every season Gapado looks a bit different depending on the color of the barley fields at that time. At the end of April and the beginning of May it is entirely filled with green sea-like wavy fields of barley. The barley fields take up about 600,000 square meters of the whole island. The type of barley native to the island is a bit bigger than regular barley. This makes the green fields look even more impressive when the wind blows and creates the waves.
During the Gapado Green Barley Festival many visitors come to see the barley fields and to participate in ongoing festival activities. Activities include events such as walking trails, making wishes by building a stone tower, catching octopus, shellfish preparation workshops, fishing competitions, and a farmer's market.
The events might be subject to change depending on the year.
