- An island where the wind shows you the wayTravelling Chujado’s Olle walking trail 18-1
When exploring a new place, it’s important to slow down and take in all the tiny details. This is especially true when you might not get a chance to return anytime soon. So, let’s take a journey to remote Chujado Island and its Olle walking trail No. 18-1. You’ll find it is full of beautiful scenery and precious memories.
The Olle 18-1 course takes you on a comprehensive tour of the island’s upper and lower sections. The complete walk takes about six to eight hours, so you’ll need to plan your day (or days) with this in mind. Since Chujado has only a limited number of ferries running from Jeju City, you may want to arrange to stay overnight.
Beginning at Daeseo-ri village, the path proceeds past famous landmarks such as General Choe Yeong's Shrine, Bonggeullesan Mountain, Nabaronjeolbyeok Cliff, Chujagyo Bridge, Sinyang Port, Mogjin Beach, and more. Be sure to check out the small side paths for new and interesting discoveries, and if you can, plan to watch the sunset at Bonggeullesan.
This is a 2-kilometer section of the trail that has downhill and uphill stretches that are not too taxing if you proceed slowly. The path leads you along a remote part of the north part of the island, so it’s best to prepare water, snacks and other supplies for the hike.
At the northernmost tip of Daeseo-ri Village is an 85.5-meter-tall peak. When you reach the summit, the island comes into full view and framed by the sea, a truly spectacular image. Landmarks include a pagoda and shelter and it is also a favorite sunset viewing location.
This shrine is Jeju Island Monument No. 11. In the Goryeo Dynasty (specifically the late 1300s), General Choe Yeong was ordered to Jeju Island to fight Mongolian invaders there. A storm diverted his ship to Chujado, where he stayed for a number of days. On his subsequent return to the mainland, Choe again stopped at Chuja and is said to have taught the islanders how to make fishing nets. His memory is honored by the Chuja people with a shrine that has a stunningly beautiful view of the sea.
This picturesque island village is set in front of Dondaesan Mountain. You’ll find village to have a combination of colorful roofs mixed in with plain ones. If you approach from the direction of Sinyang, you will see a cultural monument dedicated to the welfare of women and the safety of the island’s fishermen. It is also a famous location to view the sunrise.
Sinyang Village has a few small shops with colorful signboards and alleyways bathed in the setting sun. Located next to Sinyang Port, its atmosphere is cinematic. There is a large pavillion in the center of town, so this is a good place to take a break. In Sinyang 2-ri there is a traditional Korean house, or hanok, that offers rooms for the night.
When you ascend Sindaesan Mountain, you will see a grave site which evokes a deep sense of reverence in the people who pass it. Hwang Kyung Han, a local Catholic man who was martyred during the Catholic Persecution of 1801, lies here.
