VISIT JEJU

The name Sanji was first used as Sanjichon by Sunryeokjung Hwagong Kim Nam-gil in his drawing 「Tamnasullyeokdo」. A Moksa in Jejudo Island, Lee Hyeong-sang ordered Kim Nam-gil to draw the painting in 1702, in the 28th year of King Sukjong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty. According to the record in 「Jejudo Island Tonggwon 42, 1969」, it was first called Sanjeo, but later recieved its current name Sanji. There are two theories how Sanji Lighthouse got its current name. One is that because Garakkutmul (east of Ohyeondan Altar) from Sanjicheon Stream in Hallasan Mountain flowed through Geonippo Port to the sea, people started called it Sanji instead of Sanjeo. The other is that Sarabong Volcanic Cone, which was stemmed Hallasan Mountain, stretched north down to the coast and went up again, so it was called Sanji from then. So, the lighthouse was named Sanji Lighthouse after the name of its region. If you go up the Sarabong Volcanic Cone, which is the most famous park among residents in Jejudo Island, you cannot miss a white lighthouse, where you can see the entire view of Jeju Port, which served as the gateway to Tamna. It is Sanji Lighthouse, where you can see a picturesque sight of the coastal cliffs and the ocean! At Sanji Lighthouse, you can see the spectacular view of the broad ocean and Sarabong Volcanic Cone. Also, it is located near the city, so it has become a famous spot for field trips for students ranging from kindergarten children to high school students. It is playing a role not only as a lighthouse, but also as a valuable tourism resource. When the sun sinks into the ocean and dyes it red, the white bubbles from the waves made by the fishing boats and the sunset create a marvelous jade-colored view in front of the lighthouse. When the lighthouse lights up the dark ocean, lights from the hundreds of fishing boats look like a spectacular fireworks show in the middle of the ocean.
