The Gueom village Stone Salt Flats, located just next to Gueom Port, is a wide, flat coastal area of volcanic basalt rock. This is where residents of Gueom village were famous for producing salt over the course of centuries.
Since the 1550s, the technique used was to build a bank of low clay walls on the rocks and drying seawater in the bright Jeju sunlight. This trade became a major source of income for area residents. For nearly 400 years these salt flats have produced high-quality seasalt, though in the 60 years or so the technique has given way to modern salt production methods.
Gueom’s salt flats are now a historical site, restored and complete with a tourist information center and parking lot. Information signboards provide visitors with various kinds of information about the flats, such as their origins and production methods. Tourists who are unfamiliar with salt production methods and stone salt flats will benefit from a visit to the site.
